Research at the MIND lab seeks to understand the networks of brain structure and function that enable musical processes: auditory and multisensory perception, learning and memory of sound structure, sound production, and the human aesthetic and emotional response to sensory stimuli.
Tools for this research include human electrophysiology, structural and functional neuroimaging, noninvasive brain stimulation, and psychophysical and cognitive experiments as motivated by the following questions:
- How do humans perceive and produce music?
- How can music be used to understand the brain?
- Why do humans enjoy music?
- How can music be used to help people with neurological and psychiatric disorders?
Black Lives Matter.
We stand with the Black community in the United States and condemn the racist violence perpetrated by police against black lives. We stand with those demanding justice for George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and the hundreds of black people killed every year by police who do so with impunity. There can be no equality in science until we as scientists work to be anti-racist every single day. We acknowledge that this bias runs deep and we commit to unlearning racism. We will work to create a plan of action to ensure that the MIND Lab is an anti-racist organization, and we will be transparent about these efforts as they unfold.
Anti-Harrassment Policy
The MIND Lab is dedicated to providing a harassment-free lab experience for everyone regardless of gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, age or religion. We do not tolerate harassment in any form. Violation of these rules may result in sanctions or expulsion from the lab.
